Hi there, I’m an international student enrolled for a 1-year MA in Education in the UK starting September 2026, I am a Special Education/SEND teacher. I plan to start a PhD in Canada.

1. Timeline: When should I apply for PhDs during a 1-yr Masters? When should I contact supervisors?

2. Funding: What stipends/scholarships exist for intl students in who wish to pursue field of Special Education?

3. PR: What’s the route from Student → PhD → Skilled Worker → ILR, and can dependents stay with me during PhD?

Would love advice from anyone who’s taken this path. Thanks!

1. Would start speaking to potential supervisors about your research interests in the fall and would apply during the winter. You should look at the application timelines at each school. Tough to tell you what pathways to PR will be available when you graduate because the programs change and also can depend on provinces. Also depends on your career goals after graduation. If you know some French that may also be an easy way to secure PR. There are some pathways for those with advanced degrees and education is a field in demand in Canada so if you after graduation if you work in the field of education that may be a pathway to secure PR. Do you have job experience in the UK or abroad? Would look at the various PR programs but many also give points for foreign work experience at that can often be needed to get enough points to get selected for PR. If you have studied French that can be the easiest pathway to secure OR because the scores needed are much lower than English language programs. If you know French you could likely secure PR before coming to Canada.
