I am wondering can pr holders drive and rent a car using an international driving license??

I've rented cars using a US license as a visitor/tourist before. They don't ask you if you're a PR or Canadian citizen when you rent a car.

If you are a new resident, you do not need an IDP. Instead a province like Ontario allows you to drive on your foreign driving license if:

Visiting: less than 3 months
If you are visiting Ontario for less than 3 months and want to drive while you’re here, you can use a valid driver’s licence from your own province, state or country.

You will also need to:

• be at least 16 years old
• have proper insurance coverage for the vehicle you will drive
• carry an original (or exact) copy of the vehicle ownership permit
• obey traffic laws, drive safely and avoid collisions when you drive

Visiting: more than 3 months
If you will be visiting from another country for more than 3 months, you will need an International Driver's Permit (IDP) from your own country.

This is a special licence that allows motorists to drive internationally when accompanied by a valid driver’s licence from their country.

You need to have this permit with you when you arrive in Ontario. You cannot apply for one once you are here.

1. You should note that the OP is coming as PR not a visitor, you quoted the guidelines for a visitor to Ontario.
2, New PRs can only use their home country DL for 60 days before they require an Ontario DL See: https://www.ontario.ca/page/exchange-out-province-drivers-licence#section-0

So i can use mine for the first 60 days after landing correct

I can use the license that i have for the first 60 days after landing or for my period of stay of 60 days?

I landed as PR in Ontario in July and had no problem using my international driving license to rent cars whenever I needed to. They don't ask about your immigration status. Insurance is expensive though, $20 and $25/day for the two companies that I used (Discount Cars and Enterprise).

From my understanding I need to get an Ontario driving license within 60 days of my landing date. Already passed the G1 and preparing to attempt the G test at the end of this month (provided translated versions of my overseas driving license as well as driving history)

Not needed, in general the international driving license is just a translated version of your local driving license

Yes, once you land just get your local driving license translated by an Ontario certified translator (if it was not in English/French) then you can skip the one year wait between G1 and G2. You will have to wait however the mandatory time between the G2 and the G.

Ok thats great thanks BC4life, mine is already in english. So there is no need for driving history records then? Guessing people mostly get those to probably try lower insurance costs.
Whats the wait period between G2 and G and at which level can I basically drive un accompanied.

With driving history and 2+ years experience you can directly attempt G once you pass G1 written test, no need to pass the G2.

With G2 you can also drive unaccompanied. There are just a few minor restrictions as compared to G I believe.

Not sure the wait period between G2 and G maybe another forum member will expand on that.
