Important News indeed.

Those guys who already have completed physical presence of 1095 days, should not wait any longer to apply for Citizenship as rules might change any time and then you may have to wait another year or so.

That is the reason I am applying next week and even do not want to apply in 2014.

Thanks for updating this.

Great news! As a Canadian citizen I strongly support Immigration Minister Chris Alexander. The citizenship residency requirement should be increased to 6 out of 8 yrs, not 4 out 6 yrs. There are too many immigrants in Canada, and something needs to be done!

I expect the change will be announced in January 2014.

I do not think change will be so soon. It will take at least another couple of years if at all happens.

They will introduce the bill. Before it gets anywhere and becomes a law it will take a long time.

Do you hope it takes a long time? No, it can be passed right away. They are doing this for the upcoming election. If they can get this done, they'll win the election again.

No I do not hope. For me it doesn't matter. I live in Canada and I plan to stay here.

In general legislative process takes a long time in most democracies. In order to for a bill to become a law it can take time esp on an important area such as immigration. Although Canada has a majority Conservative government it may take a while for the bill to become law. They like to take their time in the government.

How long does it usually take to pass a bill in Canada?
Does anyone know the average amount of time it takes to pass a bill in Canada? Or the shortest time it can take to the longest time it can take?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters
With a majority government - a week.

Ha ha ha!

Let us wait and see. We won't know until it happens esp given the Senate scandal etc. I am curious to find out how long it takes.

If the change makes it easier to process the citizenship application I am all for it. They should adopt the system like in the US. Five years to become a citizen and you can be in the country 6 months in a given year and not issue RQs as they have been doing it in Canada.
It takes about 2'-3 months to get a citizenship application processed in the US.
Hope the new change will be positive for the processing times....

I'm interested in seeing an actual bill though. These news are mostly old, some opinion by some lawyer, I've heard it before. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

No, this one came out today.

They have been talking about it for a while. Let us see when it actually happens. As for Jan 2014, I am not very optimistic since those MPs like to enjoy their winter vacation :)
