Hi everyone,

I apologize if this is a repeat topic.

I am a Yemeni citizen, I lived almost my entire life in Saudi Arabia, I have applied for Student Visa to the US and once I received it, I went to the US stayed there for few days then I entered Canada, and went through all the process and court, and now I’m a permanent resident (received my PR a year ago).

I have heard some people mentioning that I have to “Close my file” in the US since I didn’t stay there, so they can update my status and I can apply for US visa in case I ever wanted to go for a visit, and to not face any issue in the future once my file is closed.
(They used the term “file” I really don’t know if there’s any other term to use)

My question is, Is there a file/case that I have to close? Is this going to cause any issue If I ever wanted to visit the US? What should I do in this situation? Or is there any application or process to go through in this situation?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
K

Ask on a US immigration forum.

Did you cross the border and claim refugee status in Canada?

Assuming so, there's nothing for your to close it the US to the best of my knowledge.

You will need to apply for a visa to enter the US. It's hard for any of us to say how that process will go for you. Since you applied for a US student visa and then used that visa to enter Canada and claim refugee status, it is possible that the US may refuse your visitor visa on those grounds. We have seen that happen on this forum to a number of people. There is also a chance you may be approved. Again, not really possible for any of us to say. But you can certainly try applying and see what happens.

Once you have Canadian citizenship, you will not need to apply for a visa to enter the US.
