INLAND: Minister promises immediate PR to spouses

John Mccullum during interview to Canadian Immigration Magazine:

"I will tell you one other area we’re looking at. Currently, it takes far too long to reunite spouses. When a Canadian marries a non-Canadian, it takes up to two years or more sometimes to properly reunite them, and this is way too long and much longer than other countries take. One of the priorities I will have is to address this issue. Processing times are too long in many areas, but one of most serious is in the case of spouses. We’re getting rid of that two-year thing. We’ll have spouses become permanent residents immediately soon."

So...McCallum made a huge promise.

He is not referring just to inland apps. People who have applied inland are already "united" with their spouse. So to "reunite" spouses he is referring to outland apps.

Also an immediate PR approval will never happen, and it was foolish of him to even suggest. That would mean foregoing background checks on applicants which takes time depending on the country they're applying from, plus allowing immediate PR status with no conditions would result in a booming business of fake marriages and fraudulent PR apps.

Of note, their election promise was to get rid of the "condition 51" stage of PR status for the first 2 years after approval. Wouldn't be surprised if he's confusing this term.

Outland has been processed in few months. What kind backlog is this? McCallum was talking about spouse who lives in Canada and the huge backlog. He called something as "thing". For my understanding is the backlog of 2 years (26 months). Conditional does not mean nothing to who is waiting so long.

Think you need to look up the meaning of the word "reunite". Spouses who have applied inland so are living together in Canada, do not need to be "reunited". Some outland apps take 2 years and longer, during which time the spouses are actually separated.

Either way though, it's still a foolish promise to make. He should promise to decrease waiting times to a reasonable level, not to make it "immediate". Based on what I've heard from this new immigration minister to date though, he doesn't seem like the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Why could be a huge mistake? I'm sorry, but if someone decide to marry you... you must not wait for the Government to save your marriage. Get marry with who you trust and love. If the marriage get to the end, this should not be a problem to the Government to solve.

Why wouldn't it be a mistake? If you're in a genuine relationship than having conditional PR shouldn't matter to you, if someone is using a Canadian to get PR then conditional PR is a good extra level of help/protection for such people. There is really very little that I can see that is wrong with conditional PR, and they have addressed issues such as domestic abuse etc.

Unfortunately thats a very naive view. How is it abusive? Why shouldn't a government protect its citizens and its country against immigration fraud?

It's also to protect all other Canadians, to prevent foreigners from scamming Canadians into marrying them only to get PR status, then leeching off the Canadian system which all taxpayers will end up paying for.

I could care less about what the minister intends to do with C51. How about promising our spouses immediate TRVs instead so we can be together while the CIC takes their time processing our apps? I'm sick and tired of this.
