For those thinking about traveling while their PR application is in progress I wanted to share my experience. My partner and I (sponsor) recently traveled to Europe for a couple weeks to my partner's home country to visit family and friends. We are still waiting for AIP and my partner is currently on a visitor's visa.

On our return home, we went through customs in Montreal, there were no issues at all. The only thing the officer was concerned about is making sure my partner had legal status in Canada. In her case she's has on a visitor's visa and that the was only thing the officer asked to see. I'm not sure if he actually checked that we had a sponsorship application in progress; the officer let us through fair quickly.

For people thinking about traveling outside Canada during the sponsorship process I would make the following suggestions.

1) Limit your travel time to about 2-3 weeks (typical vacation length).
2) Travel with your sponsor.
3) Don't travel if you let your status run out.

Make sure your bring the proper documentation - current visas, AOR letter from CIC etc.

Thanks to the people who gave me their info when they traveled outside Canada.

Hi Every Body
I am seeking advice to sponsor by spouse. The situation is given as under
I am PR of Canada and already in Canada but doing my studies
My Spouse on study permit in Canada but her permit expired in Oct 2014
We got married last year and expecting baby soon.
I am looking to sponsor her for by inland application.
Now my concern is how i will extend her Visa, after going through post some people suggest me to apply for open work permit but she hold study permit now.
Can some one guide me in this regard, and for work permit we have two application one with in and one out of Canada, So which one i will use.
So my Question is how i will extend her stay by open work permit with Sponsorship application or apply for study permit extention.
Any suggestion highly appreciated.

We had two AIP's last week (or was it AIP + DM) .. I thought CPC-M was starting up.....i assumed that we'd have a whole bunch of AIPs today... I wonder why there's been no more good news...

Maybe they're reviewing today and the ones who were looked at today will get the good news tomorrow, maybe a whole bunch of AIPs were issued today but none of those people happen to use this forum or havnt had a chance to post the good news yet, maybe the two that we saw were part of a small group that was used as a teaching example to a bunch of case reps who are learning the process, maybe thats the speed at which they work now... two a week? (I HOPE NOT!! )

......uggghhhhhhhhhhh i wish i knew what was going on.

Hahaha I like your bitter joke. The entire unit at CPP-M that is responsible for inland application process 2 applications per week. That would take the very last batch of us about 192 years, or 2 centuries, to be called for landing. By then most of us would have died. Current officers all would have died too. So we do the landing in heaven (or hell), depending on where CIC forward our files to.

What kind of studies is your wife doing? Has she graduated? When does her study permit expire?

When ppl were suggesting an open work permit for your wife they may have been referring to post grad work permit http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-postgrad.asp

This would be separate from your sponsorship application.

Other questions. Does your wife plan to stay with you in Canada during the process? If so you want to do the inland application.
Does your wife currently have Healthcare. When does that expire?

Just an update: still have not landed yet for my common-law (currently AIP). Can someone please help me with this question?

My common-law went to a Japanese agency and filled out taxes for 2012 and 2013. We've been common-law since July 2012. The Japanese agency told her she needs to fill it out as "single" because she is not landed yet.

Now this can affect her and also my taxes. I'm the only one with income and I would get more tax back if it was filled out as common-law instead of single.

I am about to do my taxes for 2012 and 2013 now and planning to fill out as common law. Any advice for this guys?
As Ponga said, this is bad advice. It is for sure tax fraud to list yourself as single when you are a common-law couple for Canadian taxes. Residency for tax reasons is different from immigration's residency. Residency for tax reasons means that you have been in the country for at least the last six months. Given that you have AIP, I'm assuming your common-law has been in Canada for 6 months and thus should be filing taxes here. You should list yourselves as common-law and file for both your incomes, even if your common-law is zero income. If your CL doesn't have a SIN then you need to apply for an Individual Tax Number and you can mail that in with her zero income tax return.

I called Revenue Canada probably about 5 or 6 times when filing our taxes to make sure we were doing it right and not all the workers knew what needed to be done, so I was transferred to supervisors and spoke to the guy who specialised in international tax issues. Their customer service is pretty good (much better than CIC). (My common-law is also zero income and he did not have a SIN or any other number like that. He doesn't even have AIP yet, just implied status.)

Seconded, bad advice. By law, If you are living together for 12 consecutive months you are common law. Your right by filling your tax together, you can get spousal amount. If you will file it separately, then you will get audited, you will ended paying back the government from the benefits you have received.

If you are filling your 2012, you are not yet common law. But 2013 yes.

Probably means is holiday the whole week. :(

I'm pretty sure only 2 AIP's were given last week, and they were both received before July 8... Like July 7 I think.
So I'm afraid CPC-M didn't really start working on the application.
They processed just the ones who were not compatible with what the CIC webpage says.

Hoping they start soon, it's getting very weird all this time with no updates.
