If a person comes to Canada with a work visa for a year and 6 months before your permit is up
your employer decides to shut down their business, in that case you still have 6 months left in your visa but
you are no longer working, so what is your status during the last 6 months?

If your work visa is good for 1 year and 6 months, your valid status is 1 year and 6 months. It's not based on if you have a job. You status will end on the date that is marked on your work visa document.

Even if it was a closed permit for an employer that is no longer in business?

For a person with a valid study permit that stops studying, their permit becomes invalid. Are you sure the same doesn't apply for those without an Open Work Permit?

Thanks for pointing that out! I was thinking OWP. Deleting my comment.

It doesn't matter if it's a closed work permit. A person's status remains valid as long as their work permit is valid, unless IRCC formally revokes it.

So...is that also the official policy for someone with a study permit that no longer attends classes?

No. Study permits have different rules.
