Hi,

I am from Sweden and have been living in common law relationship with a Canadian since 2006. We now have a daughter who is born in Sweden. Is there any way our daugther and myself can apply for dual citizenship? What needs to happen in order for us to be able to get that? We are currently living in Sweden.

Your daughter is a Canadian citizen by birth assuming your common law partner was born in Canada. Follow the instructions on the link here:

You do not qualify for Canadian citizenship at this time. You would first need to be sponsored for permanent residency and then you would need to live in Canada for a number of years before qualifying for citizenship.

Ok. Thank you for your reply. That’s correct. My partner was born in Canada, our daughter was not.

Unless you plan to move to Canada, there are really no options for you to get either Canadian permanent residency or citizenship. Are you planning on moving to Canada to live there?

That’s not decided at the moment, but I wanted to know the process
