Hi there,
My Canadian-born wife and I moved to Canada in April 2017 via spousal sponsorship (I am British-born).
We planned to stay here for many years, however are mulling moving back to the UK again for a few years.

I am a PR (landed in Oct 2016, but went back to UK and moved in April 2017).
If my wife and I head back to the UK, does that count towards time spent (for my PR and eventual citizenship)?

If not, I am guessing I will lose my PR status after a few years, what happens if we want to settle in Canada again in the future?

PR, yes. Citizenship, no.

Thanks, sounds like that means I can continue (and will be able to renew my PR status)?
You PR status doesn't expire, therefore doesn't need to be "renewed". Only the PR card "travel document" needs to be renewed and you have to apply for that from within Canada. You would also need to pick it up from IRCC in person, as they will not ship a new one outside Canada.

A few other posters have claimed they've managed to renew PR card while living in another country with Canadian citizen spouse.

However in all cases IRCC will demand you return to Canada to pick it up, so if your PR card is expired by then you'd need a PR Travel Document to fly back to Canada, or come back via USA land border.
