Importing without the intent of registering

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this. My husband will be driving his vehicle up but as a welcome to canada present I've bought him a new truck. So his vehicle that he is driving up here will not be registered. Do we still have to go through the hassle of export and import if the vehicle will be driven to destination and then parked?

it's not required to import the car. however, if at any point in the future you intend to sell it, register it or insure it in canada, you will need to export/import it first. you will have a difficult time doing those things it without going through the process. if it will never be on the road in canada, then technically there's no need to go through the process.

To make your life a lot easier, he should sell the car in the US first and just use the new Canadian car from day 1 in Canada. Else as mentioned, unless you intend to just throw the old car away to a junk yard, when it comes time to do something with the old car it will be a huge hassle if never officially imported. Even getting the car back to the US to sell it in the future could be difficult if the car is unable to be insured at the time.

He has to drive the vehicle here as I have no way to get the truck to him in a week. It won't be registered or ever sold. It will be turned into a bogger for our mud pit endeavours haha.

on a side note, i wonder if you can legally use a us car for parts in canada without it properly being imported? i would imagine no, since the parts technically were never "approved" for canadian roads through the import process or does it not matter for parts?

I know that when I was going to be going to the u.s I went through my dealer for the paperwork to say that the car was up to u.s standards and they brought my vehicle in to change the doorhandles because they were not. It was a brand new car LOL so I doubt that its legal to sell the parts without going through the process
