Hi
I am applying for spouse visa through New Delhi, India (I am the applicant). I do not have my surname (family name) on my passport, only my first 2 names. On all my documents including marriage certificate and degrees, I only have my first 2 names (no surname). Will this create a problem for immigration and in the future in Canada? I heard somewhere that it is very important to have surname in Canada. Should I change it before they ask for my passport (get a new passport and submit my old one with it to CIC in Delhi) or wait until after I land in Canada to get a new Indian passport?
thanks in advance! :)

Here's a quote from one of the guides in CIC which ould help answer your question.:
Personal Details
Question 1

Full name

Type your family name (surname) as it appears on your passport, travel or identity document (even if the name is misspelled). Do not use initials.

Note: If you do not have a family name on your passport, travel or identity document, enter all your given name(s) here and leave the given name field blank.

Type all of your given name(s) (first, second, or more) as it appears on your passport, travel or identity document (even if the name is misspelled). Do not use initials.

Note: If you do not have a given name on your passport, travel or identity document, leave this field blank. Do not enter “*”, “Not applicable” or “NA”.

thanks for your reply! i dont think then i should be worried about not having applicant's last name on passport. it seems that they will accept the application and we can get visa without last name. regarding putting the applicant's name on spouse visa forms...some of the forms for spouse visa and other cic guides it say something different about how and where to write your first, second and third names (it is confusing). i think i wrote applicant's first and second name as surname and put nothing for given name. do you think that is right?
thanks again!

i also thought that the guide you posted here only applies for the sponsor because it was on one of the sponsor's forms i think. are you sure it applies to the applicant also? if it does, i think i did it right.
thanks again :)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to inquire about my name, I don't have my surname (family name) mentioned in my passport and in my academics certificates as well. Please advice what should I mention in surname column because whenever I try to submit my application, error appear on the screen regarding blank surname, and I believe this kind of problem I will face in future process also so please suggest so I will follow this for whole process.

Thanks and Regards

Manish
