Implied status - extending visitor visa and open work permit

Hello,

My husband has a post graduation work permit.
I am in Canada with visitor visa expiring in 4 months.

Here are my questions.
I will apply for a spouse open work visa before my visitor visa expires.
What happens after my visitor visa expires and i still don't hear from open work visa?
Can I stay in Canada which is implied status? Or, should i extend visitor visa explaining I need to stay in Canada to get open work visa?

I've searched the forum and CIC website but still not sure when Implied status works fine.
Please, anyone who knows about it help me.
