Immigration Procedure for Software Professional

Hi,

I am a software professional working in India. I am planning to immigrate to Canada, but have few questions I would love to hear your feedback on:

1. I have heard about places like Winnipeg, but not sure of how good is the software industry in that part of Canada. I know of Toronto, VC, etc for housing IT majors like IBM, Accenture, Cisco. Considering my profession which is the best place in Canada to start living in?

2. I do not wish to apply through an immigration agent due to the obvious reasons, where should I start? I would appreciate if I could be guided with an eye on the fact that I wish to apply through the working professional scheme.
