Hi all,

My wife (Hong Kong citizen) and I married this July and I'm filling out the papers as everyone here. I was born in Vancouver, and not on welfare. I'm currently working at HSBC as a CSR and have started working there since April 2014. I make only around 1500cad per month (I know I know, that's also why I'm back in school getting an accounting diploma from UBC).

My question is, so for section 18 I guess I can provide proof of employment from my manager. I do have history payrolls in my bank statement as well.

But for section 19 in form IMM5491, it states "If you must meet the minimum necessary income requirement and you, and if applicable, your co-signer" then on it goes a list of request that I provide some kind of source of income, which I don't have any, do I just write N/A for that section?

And what kind of minimum necessary income requirement is there? It's worrying because I'm only making 1500cad a month. Anyone know if there is, or what is the minimum necessary income required in order to be able to sponsor their spouse?

There is no minimum income requirement for family category applicants, but you need to inform CIC what your financial resources are so as to prove that you and your wife will be able to support yourselves in Canada either from your own resources or from those those resources supplemented by contributions by others (parents for example); f for eample your parents are willing to house you for a while until you can afford a place of your own, include a letter from them saying so. You must complete the financial information section of the application however; so definitely do not write N/A in that section. If you did so, your application might well be returned.

The letter from my parents stating they're willing to provide us shelter is easy enough I suppose.

But for section 19, I really have no other information to provide. I really only just work at HSBC and I have no outside income. I do have paystubs so I guess I can provide that for section 19.

Much appreciated for your input!

As you are not required to meet a minimum income, section 19 does not apply to you.

I have confused you by not noticing that you were specifically asking about section 19 of the document checklist IMM 5491, for which I am truly sorry. Canuck in UK is quite right: section 19 of the checklist does not apply to you, because you are applying to sponsor your wife: see the opening words 'if you must meet the minimum necessary income requirement..' , the operative word being 'if' .You do not have to meet the minimum income requirement; so paragraph 19 is inapplicable. I was thinking of and referring to paragraph 3 of IMM 5481(sponsorship evaluation), which requires you to state your net personal income. You do have to complete that.

If you are employed, then that is all that matters. All you will need to satisfy the income portion of application is:
- Option C printout from CRA (item 17)
- letter from employer (stating years worked, salary, etc) (item 18)

And that's it. No other income info should be required at all.

These forms can look straightforward at times but it can also be confusing with some of its details. Thanks everyone, truly appreciate your comments and input. Everything makes sense now.
