I applied for a Super Visa extension, and I received a request from IRCC on April 16, 2025 to complete a new Immigration Medical Exam (IME) within 30 days (by May 16, 2025).

However, I already completed an IME in September 2021, which is within 5 years, and according to IRCC’s public policy (extended to October 5, 2029), applicants in Canada applying for temporary residence (including Super Visa extensions) may be exempt from a new IME if:

  • The previous IME was within 5 years,
  • The applicant currently resides in Canada,
  • The previous medical exam showed no risk to public health or safety.

Believing I qualify, I submitted multiple WebForm enquiries asking IRCC to confirm whether my 2021 IME will be accepted or if I must complete a new one. Here are the dates I sent enquiries:

  • April 16, 2025 – Initial request for confirmation of exemption
  • April 22, 2025 – Follow-up for clarification
  • May 1, 2025 – Urgent follow-up as the deadline approached
  • May 7, 2025 – Another follow-up requesting clear direction
  • May 12, 2025 – Final follow-up requesting deadline extension or updated medical exam letter

The 30-day deadline expired on May 16, 2025, but I have not received any clear response yet.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone applied for a Super Visa extension in Canada and faced a similar IME request?
  2. What should I do now since the IME deadline has passed and I’m still waiting for IRCC’s reply?
  3. Is it possible to get an extension or have IRCC accept a previous IME after the deadline?
  4. How can I effectively get a clear answer or escalate my case when WebForm replies are delayed or unclear?

Thank you for any advice or shared experiences.

As per https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-i...al-asked-again-what-to-do.479614/post-6123621 IRCC sometimes will ask for a new medical for various reasons, such as if an illness was found that they wish to monitor.

Importantly, the language of https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...l-exams/requirements-temporary-residents.html says "You may be exempt".

Based on this, I think the right thing to do is to just get a new medical.

The other thing is - isn't a super visa good for two years? So if you extended it by another two years, it'll expire sometime in 2027. But your old medical seems like, even if the public policy applies, that it should be considered as expired on Sept 2026. So the reason for the new medical may be to have a valid unexpired medical test that covers the additional visa time...?

1. The policy is primarily for those on SP and WPs who will be accessing all their healthcare through the provincial healthcare system. They also tend to be younger so already less likely to have significant health changes within 5 years. Supervisa extensions don’t exist so I assume you mean you have applied for a visitor record. It is very common to receive a request for another medical when attempting to extend your visit on a supervisa. This is because a senior’s health can change dramatically within a year or two.
2. You must do the medical or your parents will have difficulty visiting Canada in the future.
