Hi,

I need help! I am a Canadian Citizen and just came back to Quebec after living in the states for 10 years. I was a permanent resident of the US and still am for now but I moved back to Canada first to find a job and help us settle here easier as my fiancé and I wanted to move to Canada where my family was. I got a job and its going well but we were wondering where would it be better to get married so she can get her Canadian residency easier/faster? Would it be better to get married in Quebec while she's here visiting or would it be just the same if we got married in the US where her family is (they would prefer us getting married there so they can be there) and then have her come here?. We've been together for almost a year now.

Im puzzled and need more information if anyone could help me i'd really appreciate it.
Thank you!

It doesn't matter where you get married. Get married wherever is easiest, most convenient, most meaningful to you and your wife. CIC will only care that your marriage is legal wherever you get married. Getting married in Canada will not speed up your sponsorship process unfortunately.

It doesn't matter where you marry, a legal marriage in the US is valid in Quebec. Remember to sponsor your wife to QC, you must also Submit an undertaking application to the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles (MICC). Good luck

Thats great! Somehow people were telling me it was better to get married in Canada.

So after getting married in the US, would it be better to apply in the US or from Canada? How long would it take you think?

Hello there,

In my opinion, it's better you'll get married in the STATES and have the solid and convincing proof that your marriage is legal and genuine...and after that... you'll file a FAM/Spousal Sponsorship for your wife to be able to be with you in Quebec. But while sponsoring your wife... you need to be in Quebec...

Regards, fil_love_can

when you say "you need to be in quebec.." you mean both of us or just me?

We dont wanna be split up longer than we have to right now, I can support her if she comes here and then we apply for her but im not quite sure how it works. Still looking into that :\

Thank you so much for your replies btw!

No. Whoever told you that was wrong. It won't make any difference to CIC if you get married in Canada or the US. Just get married wherever you two would like to get married.

Since you are a Canadian citizen, you can either sponsor your wife while you are living in Canada or in the US. In either case, you would still send the entire application form to the case processing centre in Mississauga where they will approve you as the sponsor and then forward to the US to process your wife's portion of the application. Processing time in Buffalo is 4-10 months though I think most people are processed on the shorter end of that. BTW, since your wife is from the US and the US is a visa-exempt country, your wife can come visit for up to 6 months while your application is in process.

I'm sorry to take this confusing to you. But what I meant is you(you alone) being the sponsor... you need to be in Quebec and your gf/wife to be must be in the US. The sponsorship application must really start from you and your home country (Canada/Quebec). you may go to www.cic.gc.ca for further infos...

Don't worry if you'll be away for few months... the more you wait; the more glory you'll gain at the end. Just keep on praying and believing... Good luck to you and God bless...

Since he's a Canadian citizen, he doesn't need to be in Canada when he sponsors. He could live in the US if he wants, though it sounds like he's already decided to live in Quebec. Also, his wife can come to visit and stay in Canada during the process so no reason for them to be apart.

As others have mentioned, it doesn't matter to the CIC what country you get married in. However, from your story I would recommend that you get married in the US since you said her family will be there if you do. Having family and friends at your wedding is a pretty big selling point in the "relationship legitimacy" field.
