As far as I know YES but you will be on visitor status.
I am not 100% sure. Please correct seniors members if I am wrong.

Same case, I actually wanted to apply for PhD (Fall 2013) and pursue it instead of doing MS again, i.e, i have recently completed my MS from my home country

I didn't ask about a work permit? I am self employed. I am asking if I can stay in Canada if I withdraw from my studies? Does anyone know for sure and can anyone give me a direct answer?

CIC is talking about starting to crack down on student visa fraud (i.e. where people come to Canada on student visas but then don't study). Right now you'd probably get away with it. Over the next few months / year - who knows.

1. Agreed.

I quote http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/releases/2012/2012-12-28.asp

New measures to prevent fraud in the International Student Program

"Furthermore, to help eliminate abuse of student visas, changes are being made to ensure that the primary intent of an international student in Canada is to study. Currently, foreign nationals are able to apply to any Canadian school or business offering training in Canada and need only demonstrate an intent to study – there is currently no requirement for them to actually pursue studies once in Canada and no way of tracking whether they do. These changes would provide CIC the authority to request evidence from study permit holders to verify their compliance with study permit conditions. International students would be removed from Canada if they fail to meet new requirements.

The proposed changes respond to findings from a 2011 evaluation of the International Student Program, which concluded that gaps in the program leave it open to abuse and fraud."

@ champ and vip

I do agree with both you guys but it reminds me a case of my friend and I feel system is not for genuine people rather it works well for phony people.

My friend went canada last sept-2012.She did master degree in pharmacy and she was going to study 12ths std. level student's course something like laboratory something.i asked her why don't u apply for master level or above program? she replied that she has only 6 bands so can't get admission in university so opted for 6 bands wala course.

Now story starts here. Her boyfriend is already in canada applied PR under CEC category.I had a words with her just to ask how is course going and all that. She replied that she withdraw admission and married to her boyfriend now her boyfriend will sponser her under FAM category.

here people are struggling to get student visa even with genuine intention of study.take a look at case of looking to fly, forum member applied for master degree and got refusal on the ground of proposed course is not in light..what the heck it was?was my friend's case was in light?

Under FAM category people wait for 1-2-3-4-5 years to meet their spouce and look at these guys. How clever both are!!! used study permit to get marry someone in canada and the thing is she can enjoy stay of 2 years legally because she has visa.she is fucking up system actually.

Actually i do feel shame on such people India has only one thing to say proudly that we have rich culture and these couple went single one by one and will come back with 2 babes in hands.

India is like any other country, good and bad people. Auto mechanics are known for being dirty cheats- but my best mechanic ever who was honest and helpful was Indian.

Since you're wanting to switch programs, I would keep some proof in case COC does ask. Not based on anything I've read about immigration, just a personal opinion.

the study permit is issued on the condition of being engaged in full time study. if you no longer fulfilling this condition you shouldnt be residing in canada unless you hold a different status i.e. work permit or PR

This threads last post is 6 year old. Secondly if you have a question better create a new post.

Legally no, you cannot. The visa was given to you for studying. If you want to stay as visitor you need to change your status.
