My 2 year visa ran out on the 28th May 2015, I submitted an application for a visitor visa a few days before that expired and have just received my application back as I am from "a visa exempt country and do not require a visa to enter canada" (I'm from England)

What I am wondering now is because of this is what is my status in canada, do i need to do anything else to be able to stay until my parents leave in August?

Did you apply for a visitor visa - or did you apply to change conditions / extend your stay? I suspect you just applied for a visitor visa which was unfortunately not the right thing to do.

Right now you are out of status in Canada. You could remain in Canada without status (chances are that nothing will happen). If you want to do the "right thing" you need to apply to restore your status (one fee) and also change conditions to a visitor visa (second fee).

The easiest way is, to go down to the states and re-enter canada. You can then stay for another 6 month. That procedure can be repeated an additional 3 times. You can temporary reside as a visitor in canada for 2 out of 5 years from your first entry as a tourist.
The only danger is, that the officer at the border refuses you to re-enter canada on suspicion of ythe intention to illegaly work in canada. Don't forget, you have just held a two year work permit in canada. That means, strong ties to canada and lot of contacts to potential employers.

the option with the restoration of your status and then the change of conditions, is for sure the safest way. But not the quickest or cheapest
