I have been granted my 2 year working holiday and must enter Canada whilst meeting the requirements ($2,500, Canadian health insurance etc). I am already in Canada as a visitor from the UK and cannot afford to leave and re-enter via plane. I was told I could cross the American border and re-enter that way.
Is this true? If yes how should I go about doing it? Is it safe or risky?

Thanks

As long as you have all your documents you will be fine to cross a land boarder. You must show the 2,500$ travel insurance for two years and your passport must be also valid for the two years. Double Check your work permit is all correct before you leave their office.

Does this mean I can go into America for 'lunch' and return an hour later and start my visa? Is it actually that simple? When the American border agent asks why I'm entering America should I tell them it's to start my visa on the way back?

1. Yes, it is that simple, as a UK citizen you would have to pay the $6 on entry, you don't even have to enter, you could get an administrative refusal (no bar to future entries) and return to the Canadian side to get your IEC work permit.
