This year I turned to 18 years old and intend to go to university. I have been studying in Canadian High School for 4 years without a study permit as a visitor status. In these 4 years, I kept extending my visa and got approved every time, and the next expiry date of my visa is Aug 31- 2013. I think the reason is because my family was applying immigrant to here so that my visa could get extended so many times. We got refused once in our first application of immigrant (Reason: my mom has a criminal record in about 20+ years ago and she didn't tell CIC because she didn't remember) , then now we re-applied and still waiting for the result of our new re-entry application, entered from last year December.
I have got offers from some University [UofT, Waterloo, McMaster, etc.] as an international student status. Since I only have a visitor visa, I want to convert my visitor status to student permit within Canada in order to study here. So, is there any chances if my family has sufficient income and financial support proof? I don't want to study outside Canada because I really love this country
By the way, we've already asked our lawyer to help me to apply for a new visa. I just wanna confirm the possibility so that I won't be so disappointed in the future. :'(
And my lawyer also said my application may take 2-4 months, I may not be able to get my study permit before the school starts, but I can still study while my study permit is applying in progress. He said he can get me the receipt or something to show the University that I'm currently applying for study permit, so that I can study til my passport is back. Is that true?
My situation and some other information:
- I went back to my home country in 2011 September, and re-entered to Canada in 2011 October.
- My mom and my new father are married 8 years.
- My mom criminal record was: [She borrowed her ID to her sister because her sister is going to hospital without an ID.]
You may concern why I could study in Canada without a study permit:
Can a minor child go to school in Canada without a study permit?
Generally, minor children need to apply for a study permit from outside of Canada, if they want to go to study in Canada. However, a minor child can go to school without a study permit if:
one parent (biological or adoptive) is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (My step-father is a Canadian citizen) ; or
one parent (biological or adoptive) is permitted to study or work in Canada; or
neither parent is physically in Canada.

I kinda wanna call CIC to talk about my situation. Do you think it can help?
