This year I turned to 18 years old and intend to go to university. I have been studying in Canadian High School for 4 years without a study permit as a visitor status. In these 4 years, I kept extending my visa and got approved every time, and the next expiry date of my visa is Aug 31- 2013. I think the reason is because my family was applying immigrant to here so that my visa could get extended so many times. We got refused once in our first application of immigrant (Reason: my mom has a criminal record in about 20+ years ago and she didn't tell CIC because she didn't remember) , then now we re-applied and still waiting for the result of our new re-entry application, entered from last year December.

I have got offers from some University [UofT, Waterloo, McMaster, etc.] as an international student status. Since I only have a visitor visa, I want to convert my visitor status to student permit within Canada in order to study here. So, is there any chances if my family has sufficient income and financial support proof? I don't want to study outside Canada because I really love this country :o
By the way, we've already asked our lawyer to help me to apply for a new visa. I just wanna confirm the possibility so that I won't be so disappointed in the future. :'(
And my lawyer also said my application may take 2-4 months, I may not be able to get my study permit before the school starts, but I can still study while my study permit is applying in progress. He said he can get me the receipt or something to show the University that I'm currently applying for study permit, so that I can study til my passport is back. Is that true?

My situation and some other information:
- I went back to my home country in 2011 September, and re-entered to Canada in 2011 October.
- My mom and my new father are married 8 years.
- My mom criminal record was: [She borrowed her ID to her sister because her sister is going to hospital without an ID.]

You may concern why I could study in Canada without a study permit:
Can a minor child go to school in Canada without a study permit?
Generally, minor children need to apply for a study permit from outside of Canada, if they want to go to study in Canada. However, a minor child can go to school without a study permit if:
one parent (biological or adoptive) is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (My step-father is a Canadian citizen) ; or
one parent (biological or adoptive) is permitted to study or work in Canada; or
neither parent is physically in Canada.

I kinda wanna call CIC to talk about my situation. Do you think it can help?

As of your case, If you are here on Visitor visa then you can file an application for changing your status and getting study permit. But as of my knowledge you can't study untill you get your study permit. Its not a application to extend your study visa, If it was like you are extending your study visa then you can study while waiting for new study permit. But now in your case you can't start studying untill you get your study permit.

Don't trust consultants blindly, they just want to make money by anyway. :o

I called my consultant today and he told me that they had a similar client before who is studying college while transferring his status from visitor to student. :o

http://www.cic.gc.ca/ctc-vac/getting-started.asp ..... Just check this and tell me if you are eligible or not :-)

That is what the website told me. It is exactly what I am doing right now. I mean changing my visa status

We used your answers to see if you may qualify for any of Canada's primary immigration programs. Based on your answers, it appears that you are not eligible to immigrate to Canada at this time under a federal program.

It is possible that a change in your situation could make you eligible (for instance, if you want to study in Canada you may become eligible if you are accepted into a study program). Your specific situation may alter your results.

You can find out more about requirements for studying, working or visiting Canada on this website temporarily.

Most provinces have special programs to help people move there. In most cases, you must already have a job offer, an investment plan or work experience in the specific province. The rules for application are different for each province.

Many provinces also recruit workers based on labour shortages. You can check the websites below to see which skills are needed in each province and if you are eligible to apply.
(Note: these programs are limited in numbers.)

As of i Thought you can't study without study permit but if you have full confidence on your consultant then go ahead and let me know if you went through this process successfully for my knowledge.

Best of luck for your application. May god bless you. 8) 8) 8)

yes. We went to the court and the judge asked me lots of things.
But it doesn't matter right now because I'm already over 18.

Thanks. I'll send an email to University so to make sure everything is good.

I was asking about adoption because I wondered why your adoptive father would not have applied to sponsor you and your mum? Perhaps this is what you meant was being done now? Now that you are over 18 will you have to apply yourself?

My adoptive father did apply to sponsor my mom and me. But since we are still waiting for the result of our inland immigrant application, also I wish to go to university this year, I need to transfer my current visitor status to a study permit in order to study legally in Canada

WOW! I'm so excited now! I just received an email today says, "Your application to study or work in Canada has been approved."

The surprise is I applied on July 27th, and got approved on Auguest 9th.
