Will it be possible for me and my kids to come to Canada on visitor's visa and then apply for asylum without knowing anyone in Canada or having relatives there?
Or must we know someone there?

If you come in on a visa, there is no requirement for having close relatives in Canada. Just "knowing" someone is irrelevant either way.
