How to Renew Super Visa

Hello All,

My father got his super visa in Oct 2013. He has visited me twice for about 11 months and 5 months (once in 2013/2014 and once in 2016).

His Super Visa was stamped till the expiry of my father's passport (passport expired in July 2017).

Now what is the procedure of "re-stamping" Super Visa on his new passport?

On CIC website, I only see an extension/renewel ... applies when you are already in Canada and you are extending your stay ...

Please help.

He needs to apply for a new super visa from scratch.

Extensions are for when you are visiting Canada and want to stay longer. They don't extend your actual visa.

on a side note, IRCC should hire people from this forum.

Thank you for posting a quick reply. Because I tried calling IRCC and they are not even taking calls due to high volume ... "please try again at a later time"

This is heart breaking ... so why the promise of 10 year super visa (UPTO!@#$%)

If I am understanding you correctly, Now I will have to apply from scratch ... and the previous application has no bearing on it?

10 year super visas are granted all of the time. However a visa cannot be granted longer than the validity date of a passport. So by applying with a passport with only four years of validity left on it - you limited yourself to a 4 year super visa.

Yes - you need to apply from scratch. The previous application has some bearing in that having had one previously increases your chances of being approved again. But all of the forms and evidence (including medical) have to be completed and submitted from scratch.

If the parent wants to stay in Canada but the sv is expired can the parent just apply for extension or must go back and apply sv again? I see a lot of $$$

They can apply to extend their visitor status; a valid visa is not required to maintain status in Canada.

It really isn't heart-breaking and as scylla said, the shorter duration is due to your own issue of passport validity. Just apply for another one. With a previous approval and no violations, there should be no issue.

So this reapplying is if the parent is not in Canada, but if the parent is in Canada, he/she should just apply for extension if the sv is expired, is my understanding correct or wrong?

Apples and oranges. Two completely different things.

If a parent is visiting Canada and wants to stay longer than their approved stay (and they are still in Canada), they would apply for an extension. This allows them to remain in Canada longer for this particular visit but doesn't extend their visa. Once they leave Canada, the extension is gone - it's only good as long as they remain in Canada.

When you submit a new application from outside of Canada, you are applying for a new multiple entry visa. Once approved, this would allow the parent to visit Canada multiple times) for the duration of the visa.

My mom when she gets here thru SV, she won't leave again, so we just have to apply for extension.

You’re mom can’t “live” in Canada indefinitely on a supervisa. At some point in time, if IRCC feels she is no longer visiting (multiple extension), you should expect them to refuse the extension and she will have to leave.
