How have others organized their application? Dividers, tabs? Also, can anything by paper clipped or stapled together? What about photocopies of cards/ letters, can those be stapled? How have others put photos together? I glued them on card stock paper but am I nit allowed to bind or tie them together?

Paper clips are fine but staples are not recommended in case they want to organize your papers in a different order. Check this for pictures of how some people did things: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/post-pics-of-your-application-package-here-t51373.0.html Dividers, tabs, and file folders are some popular choices.

Someone here said they will eventually drill a hole through the top left corner and connect everything except pictures and other small pieces of paper.

for us, we used a big paper clip to hold everything together
we only used staples on the certified check to affix it to application for permanent residence form and also the small envelopes where we put our photos to prevent them from spilling out and getting lost
tabs are fine but not necessary in my opinion, you just need to arrange the forms and the supporting documents in the order indicated in the document checklist.
