Hello guys, I'm new in BC for the MSP plan, so how to get benefit from Medical insurances while the MSP is not available yet for my family? I know there are other companies providing insurance for that period but they won't cover walk in clinics, in another word, I heard they only cover emergency like matters. What if we wanted to visit walk in clinics to check for other normal medical issues or sicknesses? Appreciate any help on this. Thanks!

Private insurance will only cover costs related to pregnancy if the insurance is purchased before the person gets pregnant. Is this individual already pregnant or just planning on getting pregnant?
Already pregnant. We are not planning to get the coverage for delivery, it is just for walk in clinics and tests. Because it is in the early stage.
The insurance won't cover any costs related to the pregnancy. This includes tests, medical exams, etc. The insurance needed to be purchased before getting pregnant for this to be covered unfortunately.
Walk-in clinics don’t usually do prenatal care other than doing a blood test if you need to doublecheck if you are actually pregnant. You need to get a referral to an obstetrician or midwife (often difficult to find accepting patients) from the GP. Very little is done in Canada when it comes to tests and appointments for the first 10-12 weeks unless you have complications.

Just checking. Sometime only one spouse has applied for asylum because they are the only one who a reason or proof to seek asylum. Being someone’s spouse doesn’t not guarantee that you will be granted asylum and become a protected person. Often one family member gets the protected person status while the others remain visitors and the protected person will add them onto their application. The spouse will only get PR after the profected person is granted PR.

In BC, once you receive your work permit, you have 90days waiting window after you become eligible. As you pointed out that pregnant is at early stage, most family Doctors here prefers MSP than any other medical plans including Interim Federal Cover. In that case, you will have to pay out of pocket for a visit. The challenge will be when your family Doctor refer you to OB, or to near by Hospital to do tests. They will bill you cash provided you don't have MSP.
In general there aren’t really appointments done when you are pregnant until 10-12 weeks unless you have a problem. You essentially get a referral from a GP for a referal to an OB or midwife so you can be seen around 10-12 weeks where they check for a heartbeat and whether growth is normal. There is no rush to see a doctor when there is nothing to actually do and you won’t get an earlier OB appointment.
