I need a procedure that how to get health insurance from canada.

private or public?

if private, you need to get quotes from private insurance companies. Kanetix.ca is a good place to start.

If public/ provincial, hit up their websites and look at requirements.

How important is it to get medical insurance before coming to Canada?

And what are its benefits?

medical expenses are ridiculous if you dont have insurance. e.g. hospital bed is around $1000 + a day if you need it.
You should buy insurance before you arrive as it protects you from the time you arrive at the airport.

some provincial plans (which you would be eligible to apply as a student) have a wait period. Like BC has a 3 month wait period. So you would need private insurance for that 3 months period. check with the province you are going to.

Your college or University will help you in getting Health Card. And its fees is included in the Semester Tuition fees.
And it is compulsory to take it. Because in Ontario colleges don't refund Health Card money.

Good Luck.

Not everywhere.

In BC, you are responsible for getting your own health care. Schools will charge for extended health benefits that basic does not cover but you can opt out and get that money back (its not a lot anyways and you get very good extra benefits).

I thought in Ontario healthcare was free, so why would the school charge you $ for it?

In Ontario , College provides a health card [Private company]. And they charge it around $300 per semester. And it can't be excluded.
In Saskatchewan , Colleges will help you getting the health card [Government]. And no fees for it.

I have no idea about B.C
