How to find work in Canada as a temporary foreign worker?

Hello All,

Can someone please give me some tips on how to find work in Canada as a temporary foreign worker who requires an employer to do a LMO? I'm currently working for an employer on a post graduate work permit that expires in July 2014 and my exisiting employer is not willing to sponsor my work permit and do a LMO for me. And unfortunately since the CEC rules have changed, I fear that by the time I'm eligible to apply for my PR in June 2014, the cap would have reached.

So, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to find an employer who is willing to do the whole LMO process for a foreigner with Canadian education credentials and some Canadian work experience?

Does your current employer know that they don't have to advertise the job before submitting the LMO since you are currently on a PGWP? Any chance they'd be willing to go through the process knowing this?

If your current employer is really unwilling, then I unfortunately don't think there are many tips we can provide apart from - get started as early as you can, apply to as many jobs as you're suited for and be up front about the need for an LMO. I would frankly try to switch to a new employer as soon as possible (this month if you can). If you can switch to a new employer now who is willing to go through the LMO process, it will make easier once it's time to apply for the LMO since the position won't have to be advertised.

Yup! They know. I've had a long drawn out discussion with my employer and they have made it very clear that they do not want to sponsor me. Can you suggest any agencies or services which help people like to find work in Canada?

Too bad about your employer.

I don't know of any agencies in Canada who assist individuals such as yourself. All of the agencies I've ever had exposure to will only work with individuals who can already work in Canada legally (i.e. are citizens, PRs or have open work permits).

Services (i.e. free government services) only assist Canadian PRs and citizens.

Overall, I'd recommend you stay away from agencies and try to find an employer yourself through reputable web sites such as the Canadian Job Bank, monster.ca, workopolis, etc.
