Hi All,

I'm a Canadian citizen who is born and brought up in the UK, I have never lived or worked in Canada. I am engaged with my partner who is an Indian citizen, living and working in India.

Just a week ago, I have started a new job in Canada. We are thinking of getting married this August.

In terms of me sponsoring my fiance to come to Canada, what do I need to prepare financially? I was told by an acquaintance that I need to be paying Canadian taxes for a year or more to be in a position to sponsor. Is this true? What else can I do to ensure that I can call over my fiance as in the shortest amount of time?

Hoping to hear your thoughts and advice on this.

No, that is completely false. There is no income requirement for the family spousal class, nor is there need to have recently filed taxes as a Canadian resident.

Basically you can apply as soon as you get married (and get marriage certificate), or even now if you have already lived together for 12-months (common-law). All you need to show financially, is how you intend to support yourself and your spouse after they move to Canada. Proof of a job in Canada, even if you've just started it, is more than enough for financial proof.
