How to Apply for Canadian PR from Germany

Dear Friends,

One of our family friends, they would like to move to Canada from Germany. They hold German Citizenship, both are doctors and they are looking to move Canada for some personal
reason. Could anyone guide as will it be easy for them? Do they need to apply for Express Entry or any other program? They are 48yr old's and they have enough experience.

Immigration at 48 will be difficult as Express Entry is designed for people under 30 and they will get no points for age. Nova Scotia has a nomination stream for physicians with a job offer, but they need to be licenced to practice in Canada.

Have they looked at the licensing requirement for IMGs in Canada? It is one of the worst countries to immigrate to as foreign trained physicians since many never qualify to practice again. You have to pass the licensing exams and then repeat your whole residency. The issue is there are very few spots left after Canadian students match. In some specialties there will never be residency spots available. Where did they train? Have they been licensed to work in Germany? How long have they worked there are a fully licensed physician? What kind of physician are thry? Canadian graduate also struggle to find jobs after graduating from some specialties in Canada.

Assume there is a decent chance they may be Syrian refugees. If they are hoping to practice medicine and looking for an English speaking country would suggest the UK, Ireland or the US. Australia and NZ may also be good options but I’m unfamiliar with the process and need for IMGs arriving except from a few countries.


Missed that they are 48. They will not be selected to retrain in Canada and there are very few options to immigrate at that age. They should look at moving to another EU country or remain in Germany. At 48 many medical system will not want to invest into relicensing only for the doctors to work for 10-15 years.
