Hey folks,

I’ve been lurking on this subreddit for a while, reading tons of posts (some helpful, many terrifying), and figured it’s time to post my own situation and ask: how screwed am I really?

Here’s my profile:

  • Will hit 1 year of full-time Canadian work experience at the end of August
  • Started working the month after graduating from a Canadian bachelor’s program
  • Still have 2 full years left on my PGWP
  • Working in a NOC TEER 1 job
  • Maxed out English scores (CELPIP 9+ across the board)
  • No foreign work experience (never worked back home)
  • No French
  • CRS is around 475 once I enter the pool
I know 475 used to be a solid score, but with the way things have been going lately, I honestly feel super anxious and like I’m already behind. Especially seeing stories of people with 490+ still waiting.

Just trying to get a reality check. With this setup and 2 years of PGWP runway, do I actually stand a chance or is it all just a waiting game now? Should I be doing something differently right now?

Appreciate any insight or just reassurance from people in the same boat.

Thanks.

You're not "that screwed" as you still have 2 years on your PGWP. But you must choose a path wisely. 475 points won't get you an easy invitation through express entry these days. Waiting game is not an option.

The obvious bet is to learn French. I've seen people get the required level to qualify for French streams in 1 year.

Another path would be if your NOC qualifies for any of the specific streams like healthcare or STEM, but those streams are also getting very competitive and draws are not very often (last STEM draw was more than a year ago).

Also check provincial nomination options based on the province you live.

If PR is a priority for you then don't assume the extra two years of work experience will guarantee PR. Start learning French now.
