Hi everyone,

Here is my story: I got my bachelor degree in engineering in 2010 in Colombia. After working for one year over there, I moved to Canada. After looking for a job in engineering, the only job that I could get was a kind of an internship in a small company which manufactures industrial equipment. At the beginning the company told me that they were going to pay me $800 per month ($5/hr.) and after 6 months they would increase my salary. So, I took the job trying to get some Canadian experience. It’s been 10 months and they have not increased my salary. I’ve spoken to my boss a couple of times but he always says that at some point they will increase my salary because of the financial situation. Currently I work around 9 hours per day and perform task such as: Mechanical design in SolidWorks, Electronics design, programming PLCs and assembly among others. In Addition, I just started a Master’s Degree in the University of Toronto. I feel kind of frustrated with this situation, but I don’t know what to do.

So, my question is the following: Should I start looking for another job?? If so, how much should be my salary according to my education and experience?? I’ve tried to look into some of the salary calculators but the salaries vary a lot between websites.

Or, Should I stay in my current job and wait until the increase my salary??

Thanks everybody !!!

800 dollars a month damn they abusing you!!!!

I would suggest looking for another job you practically working for peanuts...

Could you report them for paying you that much?

Hi Kets,

I think I cannot report them because I even do not have a contract with the company. They are giving me a “financial support” .
Thanks for the reply

Ola amigo, You should be making at least 3000 dollars a month. See if you can talk to a career advisor at UofT and the international student center as well for help.

switching over a company periodically after short intervals to get a bit of increment is not a favorable act. i would not recommend it, however in your particular case as you are bachelor degree holder your pay is insufficient i think you should carry out your research for better company. best of luck

Your minimum wage should be $10.25/hr (Toronto wage).

Yes, you should look for another job.

Minimum wages are payable if you are hired officially and have been given an appointment letter. There are many people who volunteer to work for free in order to garner all important 'Canadian Experience'. We should keep in mind that Canada's immigration policy is tailored to help boost the Canadian economy - not to help people from other countries lead a better life.
Keep on trying for another job. You should be earning more than CAD 3000 a month. Have patience. You will succeed soon!
