Pretty straightforward question, I can't seem to find a clear-cut answer.

How much can my wife bring with her when she lands?

Yeah i'm pretty sure $10,000 local currency per person is maximum across the globe. In my travel experience anyway. 8)

Actually, you can bring as much money as you want. There is no 10000 max. As long as you declare any cash over 10000, you are fine. I suggest that you bring proof of where the money come from.

That seems reasonable. Is there any official resource where I can find more info that you guys know of?

I just asked this question to my bank representative. And you can bring as much as you want but you have to declare everything over 10 000$. It's not just CBSA who will ask you to declare everything over 10 000$. When you will go to deposit at the bank they will ask question if you deposit over 10 000$. So if you bring over 10 000$ you must have paperwork in english or french to prove where the money come from.

Got it. So getting it in isn't the issue, it's more about providing proof when you set up a bank account.

What kind of paperwork is required by the banks? What if it's a (generous) wedding gift?

bank will not give you a hard time , they will ask simple questions because anytime they plug in anything over 10000 a form will pop up and they need to fill it . personal info and work nature . no paperwork and no proof needed .

Isn't it easier if you can wire transfer the money to your spouse's bank account. You wont have anything to declare as it is traceable. Once you land and set up a bank account, your spouse can transfer the money sent to your account.

We've considered that, but our position is a little 'special', as we currently live in a country with very stringent wire transfer rules (where neither of us are citizens), and slightly more relaxed rules about carrying physical money. Anyhow, thanks for all the help, everyone!

Right, one more thing, does it matter if the money brought in is not CAD, or do we need to switch it over to CAD first before bringing it to Canada?

It doesn't matter what the currency is. What matters, is if it converts to 10k or more CAD.

For example, having $7900 USD (today), would convert to >10K CAD.

I talked with my bank representative (BMO) yesterday. Actually it care what currency it is! If it is CAD, USD or EURO no problem at all with cash, for other currency it depend.
For our situation my wife will bring Thai BAHT and if wired bank to bank the money to Canada there will be no issue at all even if she transfer over 10k cad there is no limits.
If wired not possible she will have to bring cash, if its already convert to CAD no problem just some form to complete if over 10k.
If her Thai baht are not convert to cad then it become more complicate, beside the forms if over 10k, the bank will freeze the money for 30 days and then deposit in bank account.
The PA can also tranfer to sponsor bank account using company like Western union.

That's interesting. So it looks like we'll probably have to convert it first.
