I took mine the first time and got CLB 10. Perhaps my advice is practice and let a professional check your progress especially in the abilities that you are weak. Don't take the exam if you are not completely prepared because taking more exam will not make you any better. Practice until your instructor is satisfied with your performance. IELTS is not only about being a good in English language, it's a test so you should follow certain rules in order to get a better grade.

IMO, there are 2 main aspects - your level of English and your confidence. I have been studying in English all my life and living in the UK. I don't think my level of English is poor to warrant anything below CLB 9. My overconfidence led me to believe that this is an English exam and a piece of cake and I could nail a CLB 10 without any preparation. It's easy to achieve a 7.5 without any practice but to get an 8 in all bands requires practice and I realised it after the 3rd attempt. In the 1st 3 attempts, I was overconfident and kept missing out on 1 band or another, ran out of time and I still did not act on it. The results of my 4th attempt were withheld. I'm now awaiting the results of my 5th attempt. I hope this is my final attempt as I put in a lot of effort in this one. This time, I was consistent with my practice, alert and managed my time well.

If you are new to English, I'd suggest you improve your language first and then practice for the exam.

Once...

It's about confidence even if you are moderately good in Listening, Reading

Writing and Speaking are about confidence and grammar as well...

good luck...

Mate I succeeded finally after failing 3 times.

1st attempt: L/R/W/S - 5.5/6.5/6.5/6.5
2nd attempt: L/R/W/S - 7/6.5/6/7
3rd attempt: L/R/W/S - 8/7/6.5/7
Finally: L/R/W/S - 9/7/7/7

My advice is never give up. Keep practicing writing everyday. That's the most difficult part as you cannot get feedback for your mistakes easily.

Good luck.

Congrats. Did you try each attempt quickly or did you leave a long gap between each attempt?

Taking a break and practicing can help. I gave 1 each month. As soon as results were out, I'd book the next available.

I just prepared the format for 15 days and appeared for the exam and scored:-
L/R/W/S - 6.5/6.5/6/6
But I am not sure with the result as my listening and reading test went good.Should I go for reexamine or Retest?

This is the outcome of 15 days practice. If you want CLB 9 and above, you will need to improve your language, practice more and be consistent. If you want a high score, retake IELTS. Get at least 8 in listening and 7 in the rest.

Without prep, I was languishing in the 7.5 and 8 mark. I prepared and got my desired score in the 5th attempt.

I totally agree with xpressentry.

I required 4 attempts to reach this. Scores are not easy easy to get without practice. Re-valuation for Reading and Listening are nearly useless, as there can only be one correct answer for each question and you can be either right or wrong. Hence do not appear re-val.

Instead appear for a new test. It gives you another scoring opportunity. Remember re-val takes half of your trst fee plus waiting time.
