LANDED..........
Sep 2013
Hi everyone,

I would like to know how long we are required to stay inside Canada after we have completed landing?

I know it takes 3 months for the PR card to come in our mail box. Can we just give a friend's address and then return back to my job a week after i've done the landing? Or do i have to stay in Canada till i get my PR card.

Really grateful if someone can share their experience or any info they have read on CIC webpage.

Cheers.

Don't think there is any requirement other than the PR residence requirement (2 years in every 5 years). If you don't have your PR card while abroad, you can apply for "Travel Document" to return to Canada.

Thank you CECbear. thank you for your prompt response.

So that means, if im currently in a job outside Canada, i dont have to leave it right away. I can come to Canada only for a week to complete my landing. Give them address of my friend's place where they can send the PR card. And after checking out Niagra Falls and i can return back to my work and come back in a year or 2 year's time.

Since i wont need to return to Canada before my PR card comes, I guess I dont need to apply for Travel Document as well.

Any other minor details i may need to know this case which i might be missing?

Infoseeker,

How do you plan to send your passport to Canada ? Which country do you belong to ?

So you have not completed your landing yet? You should get a single entry landing visa as part of the immigration process. You will be able to complete the landing any time before it expires. You are expected to live in Canada permanently if you land (hence it's called permanent residence). They will ask you to give your temporary address and update them with your permanent address once you have your own place to send the PR card. I am not sure if it is legal to give a friend's address (to send PR card) when you are not residing in Canada. If you have your own place, and you are residing in Canada- but you are taking a vacation or going some where for business trip, I don't see any problem in that.

To maintain your status as a permanent resident, there are few requirements you must fulfill. One requirement is the residency obligation. You must live in Canada for at least two years within a five-year period. During this time you must be here physically.

If you "LAND" physically come to Canada you may leave right away again as long as you have been through customs at the airport and signed the paperwork. You may leave for a job or to complete studying whatever the case is and you may give your friends address so they can post your PR card to you in order for you to re-enter Canada.
