How long to receive an extension

Hi, my spoue has applied for work permit extension in September, and i am just wondering how long does this process usually take. I already received an extension but she is still waiting. Is there any phone number that we could check what is going on with application.
Another question, in case that she doesn't receive her permit before the old one runs out, is she allowed to stay in Canada and wait for it, or does she have to leave and come back?
