There's no standard... I would say "a lot". :P
 
We used the old kit and there were about 15 pages of forms, two bar code pages, and the checklist. In addition to those, there was the paper from the FBI background check, the medical paper, marriage certificate, copy of my birth certificate, copy of his birth certificate, copy of his passport info and picture, letter from my employer, my last notice of assessment from Revenue Canada, and a 4-page letter from me outlining our relationship and visiting routine for the past five years. So at least 30 pages total. I might be forgetting something. It's been a while. There was also a bundle of personal photos.

Quite a few, asside from forms, my husband birth certificate, daughter's one, marriage certificate, police certificate and in my case translation for all of them which is 3 docs per translation to certify it. My translator is an official canadian immigration translator. His copy of passport, current employer letter, work resume, his ID, Photocopies of phone records, screen shots of video chats, messenger chats, wedding photos, other photos, receipts of plane tickets, my t4's and letter from
CRA assessment letter showing i owe nothing the last 10 years, copy of my home ownership, copies passport and my birth certificate, letter of employment, confirmation of private insurance covering him as he land and a few pages of letters to explain things, just to name a few.....
 
My application including everything they asked for and pictures was 111 pieces of paper.
