Mine was really quick.

Actual medical exam done: Mar 5, 2013

Received passport request email: April 22, 2013

Manila VO
WOW! Congratulations buliwyf.. :) Pls update if you receive you PP back. thanks

in my case they asked for Passport copies not the original ones.

It depends on the VO, but largely on the travel history that you have submitted. If you don't have much outside travels, three to four months should be sufficient for security checks and getting the PPR. But if you have an extensive travel history and that too of some rogue states (as west calls it)... it surely gonna take good time.

I got my passport back, with visa stamped, around only 1 week after I sent it to the VO

Actually its not gurantee that you will get in 3 months or so on.
it purely depends upon the work load. but one thing is sure that you will get in 12 months.

But some cases, people received after that and CIC office call for another medical becuase you medical is valid for 1 year only.

NOT accurate, I did my medical in May 2013, no new up-to-date, that is 13 months. Furthermore, I have no travel history at all. The first counrty that I styed more than 6 months is Canada and I am in Canada since 2007 with no exist!!!

that is weird! how do they give final decision before analyzing the medicals which usually takes some months to be done..
They did not give a final decision before analyzing the medicals. They asked for our passports with our medicals way in advance, so there was no analyzing of medicals when they asked for our passports. But, this reduced the time delay by a few months. If at a later stage they find anything wrong with the medical, they would return the passports without the Permanent Resident visa & close the file.

But, this strategy greatly reduced the processing time as the communication delay is greatly reduced. The mails sent by them or by me takes about 20-30 days for normal mail. So, having the applicants passport in advance, reduces the time delay (40-60 days). But, this also means that the applicant cannot go to any other country as his/her passport has been taken by the Canadian High Commission for about 4-6 months or so.

I would say they are trying to reduce the processing time by taking such actions. Like:
* Asking for passports way in advance

Question 1: Which Visa Office did you submit your passport ?
Question 2: In which country are you staying right now ?

But still this practice has very rarely been witnessed here. Yes it's true that they are taking a lot of measures to maximum reduce the processing time, like sending sending MR, updated forms request and some other docs like PCC or bank statements together. Before practice was to to collect the updated forms, PCCs and bank stamens etc ,....complete the background checks and then only send the MR. Nowadays all is going along simultaneously. But again PPs along with MR, guess they are proving to be over efficient :)

Thanks all of you for your valuable post was out of the internet access for few days so could not read .Thanks all again plz keep on updating .
