Are there ways to compensate for a low number? I was unemployed for most of the last 12 months, but have a steady well paying job now and have a strong history of maintaining long term employment. There is no space on the form to explain or indicate the circumstances regarding that number (my previous 12 month income), and why they will not result in a problem for maintaining support for my spouse during the application process.

I was thinking of attaching an extra type written sheet explaining my income. Is this a valid way to go about this?

Their only concern is that you won't require social assistance. An explanatory letter and evidence you are now employed should be sufficient to overcome that.

Explain your situation in a separate sheet, and you will be fine. There is no minimum income ( no fixed number) required to sponsor a spouse, so in the separate sheet you want to prove what you are doing now, and how you plan to support your spouse when the PR is granted - whether it is with your current salary, or the house arrangement you have made, etc.... so put as many details as you think necessary, and you will be fine!
Good luck with your application,
