How worth is it to learn french before coming to Canada? I mean does it really help to get a job or ultimately get success in Canada (other than quebec)?

If you intend to move to areas around OTTAWA - it becomes a lot beneficial. However, in General, being Multilingual is very advantageous in many occupations - due "Globalization" and worldwide presence of companies. Again, to be very honest, if you are fluent in English - and I mean really fluent in all aspects, then you stand a big chance of winning the Game not only in all English speaking countries but in the world.

Bilingual has advantage, they are in great demand. They are also paid more than the others and more often have to work less also. Once hired companies try to retain them at any cost. It is worth learning french before coming to Canada but at the same time, learning french is not easy. To be fluent it can take upto 2 years with consistent efforts. I dont think it would be easier to devote this much of time at this stage of life.
At the same time one can land up with job if one is fluent in English.

Hey frenz..
Thanks a lot for your replies...

But i want to ask if one learns french upto basic level, is it of some use.?
Or fluency is surely needed in it too.?!

Actually, i am having an immense desire of learning this beautiful language from last 5-6 months..
but could not be able to spare time for it..( But whenever i got time, i used to try it online ;) )
Now very soon, i am about to join a french institute :) :)
But still little skeptical about its benefit there..!!!! :-\ :-\ :-\

Plz help......

I have been learning french from the last 4 months, attending class 2 days a week for 6 hours a week. Basic level is not enough for get a job but still we all start one day with basics and can progress towards proficiency. I find that after I started attanding french class, I am able to assist in french homework of my kid. It is a romantic language and I am in love with it. Dont think about the short term benifits, if you can spend time on long term basis you will get advantage.

No worth at all outside of Quebec.
Canada is not a 'bilingual' nation, contrary to what few think from abroad [yes, there r 2 'official languages' here -- but that doesn't mean French is widely spoken, or is a benefit/need]. English would let u spend the entire lifetime here with ease... French wouldn't assist u in fetching a job here at all [unless u r looking for an interpretor's position]. There'd be lot other factors determining your success on that front.

More specific to Ontario - let me tell u that everything here is conducted in English. Even the Govt. depts. do not have any 'French Section' so to speak. Yes, there'd be 'bilingual employees' but, that'd be by 'default' - not by 'choice'. Eg. Toronto Police do not have any French speakers@their CCR [Central Control Room] -- AND U'D BE SURPRISED... no one calls 911 [usually] in French too... it'd be just one-off case -- and under that situation they really 'flap'.

BTW, yes, as some others have opined above, learning additional languages is an asset. But, it's not limited to Canada - it'd be worldwide. And yes, French is a beautiful language - but so is 'Urdu', 'Italian', 'Spanish' and many more - including [not to forget] our 'Mother Tongue', dont' u think?

Moreover, as Explorer opined - learning French@this stage/age isn't going to lead u anywhere... let our kids learn it instead! U need complete mastery over it, for letting it be of any help to u. There'd be lot many other things to do than attend French classes, post 'landing'. Rather, let us set our English straight, if we really desire to head somewhere!

My couple of Cents...

Good luck!

I was thinking over my response to this question. You don't need French unless you plan to live in Quebec, I thought. No, I shouldn't say that! Why discourage someone who has a passion to do something? Then I thought, spending that time taking English classes would have a greater impact on one's future success, so I had better say something. While I was busy playing mental ping pong, Qorax beat me to the punch. Do WHAT EVER YOU CAN to maximize your English skills, all of them. If after that you still want to stretch your mind, then focus on French. One of the issues they are finding in Quebec is that students are coming out of 12 years of French Only education and they want to take their higher education in English speaking institutions as they feel their job prospects will be greater. The Quebec Teachers Union is looking for ways to motivate students to learn and work in French after graduation. Bonne chance!

Thanx again :)
And this time with a sigh of relief after knowing views of our most respectable Sir Qorax!
Now finally I am going with you Qorax..
I am putting my passion of learning french aside(at least for the time being)
and 'l start honing my skills over English!
