No personal experience.

Have rarely seen reports by others of experience in making early applications . . . note that CIC and for awhile IRCC previously stated that PRs whose PR card would expire in six months could apply for a replacement, even when the routine timeline was much longer than that currently reported by IRCC.

But like many or even most matters of this sort, it is easy to see that how this is likely to go could depend on multiple factors, especially the extent to which it appears the PR is well-settled in and living in Canada permanently.

The obvious answer, as is usually the case, is that IT DEPENDS. It depends on things like the PR's circumstances, the PR's work and address and travel history, how long and well settled in Canada the PR is, how much time the PR has been abroad, the nature and extent of ties the PR still has abroad (especially employment related ties and immediate family member ties).

Longer explanation: Of course you can always apply.

The earlier the application is made, the greater the odds are that an early application might be returned. But probably not strictly so, meaning an application made nine months and five days before the expiration date may have significantly better odds of being processed than one made 11 months before. How it will go in-between is anyone's guess.

More than the risk of an early application being returned, however, I would anticipate some risk that an early application might draw some unwanted attention and questions, particularly given that the routine application processing time has largely been less than three months for a long while now (currently reported timeline is out-of-date given the holidays, but as of just before the holidays was reportedly just a bit more than a month or so).

The obvious question will likely be why is the application being made early. Or, as foodie69 put it: "what's the rush?"

For most PRs this probably will not raise any concern, and will not invite more probing questions.

However, for a PR who is cutting-it-close relative to compliance with the PR Residency Obligation (less time in Canada than not in Canada), or who otherwise appears to not be well-settled and permanently living in Canada, applying early seems likely to increase the natural, obvious suspicions IRCC is more or less likely to have regarding such a PR. In other words, it seems to me that any PR who has border-line circumstances which might trigger elevated scrutiny and non-routine processing, would be pushing IRCC to indeed investigate more thoroughly by making an early application. My sense is this could be the case even if the application is made six or seven months before the card's expiration date.

And the ironic thing about this, is that by applying early the PR may actually cause IRCC to take a lot longer to process the application and thus a lot longer to issue a new PR card . . . sometimes applying later might mean getting the card sooner.

Otherwise, however, the worst outcome would be the application is returned and will need to be submitted again later.

I have a similar type of query for which I could not see any answer either here or in the Immigration's website. It is allowed for a PR to apply for PRC renewal 9-6 months earlier than the expiry date; and today's processing time for it is almost 38 days I have checked it. Question is, If I apply for it say 9, or 6, or even 5-4 months earlier, will it be processed let's say within 38-45 days in routine; what will be the next expiry date on the card?

For example a PRC is expiring Dec 28, 2017, if it's applied for renewal on Jun 28, 2017. Will it be processed and issued let's say after two months on Aug 28, 2017 for next 5 Yrs being counted from the date of issue as in this case Aug 28, 2017?

Does someone experienced something like this?

Thanks.
