I saw a thread several weeks ago with some users discussing how Trudeau's decision to bring in 25,000 refugees would affect the timelines for immigration applications. Is there any truth to this? If so, which of us will it affect?

I'm trying to sponsor my wife who is currently in Pakistan, and I don't want to seem selfish by asking this question, but I really miss her and am hoping that this decision to bring in the 25k refugees doesn't get our applications thrown onto the back burner as low priority cases. Can anyone shed some light on this? :(

No it will not effect the timeline of other immigration categories. Refugee programe is all the way different and overseas office (turkey, Lebnan etc) are processing their cases. and cic has different processing units for different categories so don't worry.

1. Actually it probably will, as IRC has to get workers for the overseas refugee processing, so they are going to draw the officers from the other programs.

Then which other immigration categories would that affect? And fine, maybe they would draw officers from other programs, but they wouldn't draw them from other visa offices around the world, right? I checked the CIC site for more info on this and this is what they say: "Interested refugees will be scheduled for processing in dedicated visa offices in Amman and Beirut."

Source: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/refugees/welcome/overview.asp

So if they're only processing the refugees in the Amman and Beirut visa offices, that would mean all other applications being processed in other offices around the world would be unaffected. Can someone back me up on this? :(

1. No, they will draw visa officers from other offices around the world and from offices in Canada. Also officers from IRC and CBSA would be drawn from Canadian offices to process "landings" at Person Inter'l as IRC has set up a separate terminal for them.

That's great. As if waiting times for everyone else weren't long enough already.

How many visa officers will they draw from the London visa office? That's where my application will be processed (mailed on December 1st).

It wont effect other categories at all or atleast the impact wont be noticeable.

logically what does the overseas offices located in Pakistan or china has todo with the syrian refugees?? doesn't make sense. they are just 25000 applications whearas cic has the capability to handle much more applications. alone in the spouse sponsor category each year the applications can go between 80,000 to 10,0000 and canadian immigration system has more than a dozen immigration categories. an increase of 5000 applications in only parents sponsor category is expected in 2016. 2ndly CIC is not a one office setup. it has multiple processing units all over canada to handle different categories and at the same time the gov has provided the resources to cic to handle this issue.

so far all the processing timeline is decreasing for other categories and more over the new government has the intentions to decrease the timeline and speed up all the family sponsor application (family re-union).

So i dont think the syrain refugee programe will impact other categories...thats my opinion

I guess so. I spoke with a former MP (who is now a minister) and he said pretty much the same, that the impact to other categories will not be noticeable. He said that CIC will be bringing in retired officers to ensure that the extra load doesn't affect other categories.
