Hello,

I need some help, the Canadian Government website is a little confusing at times.

I've been with my partner for a little over 2 years, he is Irish I'm Canadian and we need some help on how toha get him in.
Will he be able to work as soon as he gets to Canada? We've been living together for 2 years.

If anyone has any info or been in a similar situation and has any advice or a number we could call it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

He can come anytime as a visitor but he can not work until he gets his papers. First of all you should start the application for Pr outland then go from there. If he comes as a visitor he can stay for 6 months then renew his extension. He can not live here. Therefore will not have any medical insurance unless your in BC but don't quote me on that lol .

The forms can be a bit over whelming at first . Go to the London outland thread and you will see a link for Schnooks and there is a QUESTION AND ANSWER SHEET. it will tell you every thing you need to know.

Assuming that you are both common-law and lived with each other for at-least 12 consecutive months with proof such as lease agreements, mail addressed to the same address joint bank accounts, beneficiaries on a group life insurance plan, you can apply via the family class route.

When you say that you've been with your partner for two years, does that mean that you've been living together for at least 12 full months of those two years? If you have, you can start the Outland process right away. Or, does that just mean that you've been in a long-distance relationship, but are committed to each other?

If you have NOT and you're asking how he can come to Canada so that you can start the `clock' to live together for the required 12 months, he'll need to simply hop on a plane and come to `visit' ( ;) ) you. He needs to show that he has strong ties back home, if the border officer suspects that he will overstay his visit. Once he's in Canada, he can apply for a visitor extension, explaining that you and he are seeking to establish Common-law status.

Whether or not you are officially common-law or not, either way he can look into getting an IEC working holiday visa to work in Canada while establishing common-law or while outland PR app is in progress.
