How common is it to get a specific date to leave by?

I'm from a visa exempt country, just wondering is it common practice for the border official to write down a specific date to leave by, or is it almost always just the full 6 months? Thanks

Typically you get six months if you are visa exempt - but it's certainly possible to get a specific date.

+1. It can happen, although I believe it is quite rare.

Some years ago, a young relative of mine came to visit/travel around, assuming & expecting 6 months. He was given 3 months, and an extension was refused.

Almost always unless there is something odd about your visit.
