Hi Friends,

I have PR, nearly 2-1/2 years old, out of that period i only stayed in Canada only 3 months with family.
I am out of Canada now and have to move to Canada to keep my PR status, but I have some serious obstacles in the way ...

My question Is there any way I can get to keep my PR status and how many days i need to stay in canada for PR renewal?

Please advise!!!

Thank you in advance.

You can keep your PR status by complying with the residency obligation requirements. No other course of action will guarantee success. You need to have been in Canada for 730 days in the preceding 1825 days when you submit your renewal application.

You need to live in Canada for two years out of five.

If you have spent three months, you need to spend an additional 21 months.

If you have had P/R for two and a half years, then you would have approximately 9 months to move to Canada to get those 21 months without risking status. Some officers may be more lenient on this, but the two years is not flexible. After you have spent 2 years in Canada, you are then eligible to renew your P/R card.

Another way to look at is is that you may not spend more than 1094 days (3 years) outside Canada in your first 5 years as a PR, counted from your landing date, or in any rolling 5 year period after that.

Hence if you landed 2 years and 6 months ago and only spent 3 months in Canada so far, you already have 2 years and 3 months outside. Therefore, as kateg says, you can spend a max. of another 9 months outside and then you must return and stay until you complete your 2 years before you can renew your PR card.

After you renew your PR card, you have to be careful before you leave again that after you are a PR for more than 5 years, the time spent in Canada more than 5 years ago does not count towards the residency obligation any more so you always have to make sure you can look back at the past 5 years and have spent at least 2 of these years in Canada.
