There are 3 places you can do your landing:

  • CIC Office

If you're in Canada, you can call the CIC call centre once you get your COPR and schedule an appointment at a local office. The timeframe of getting an appointment varies from office to office - some you can get within a couple days, others within weeks. You can only schedule an appointment once you get your COPR.

Here is a list of all CIC offices - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/offices/help.asp - all appointments are made through the call centre regardless of the office.

  • Land Border

You can land at a Canadian port of entry which offers immigration services - most major land crossings with the US can do this (for the list, see http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/contact/listing/indexpages/indextype38-e.html - this list also shows eligible airports)

You can make a trip to the US, and land on re-entry.

If you don't have a US Visa (and you require one), you can also flagpole - you have 2 options. You can literally flagpole by making a U-Turn once you pass the Canadian border area but before you enter US customs - depending on the configuration of the border, this is not possible at all crossings. Alternatively, you can go to the US customs and tell them you are only intending to land in Canada. They will give you an administrative refusal and turn you around.

  • Airport

You can land at a Canadian airport if you're flying into Canada on an international flight. However you cannot drive to the airport to land, like how you can for the land border.

Yup, you can just drive to the border and do it there even without a US Visa. You can either drive to the US side, tell them you don't intend to enter the US - they will give you a slip and turn you around, where you drive back to Canada and complete your landing.

Alternatively, at some borders, you can start driving to the US customs but turn back to Canada without actually having to go to the US side. Some borders have a turn-off right after you pass the Canadian border station (usually with a sign "Return to Canada") - this allows you to eliminate the step of driving to the US side and having them turn you around.

Either way, you end up landing at the Canadian border station.
