Hi,

I will be in Toronto and surroundings for a live event in June.
While being there I would like to go and help for free of course in a few rescue centers of abused animals.
I have called the local Embassy in Madrid, Spain to know if I need a permit for this or what but they could not answer me.
I have been searching on Google without succes.
Can anybody point me in the right direction please.
Thank you

You should be contacting the organisation organising the event.

You are not being paid, so no permit.

Hi

Provided it is an actual volunteer position and you are not doing work that a Canadian citizen/PR would otherwise be paid for, it's fine. The easiest way to be sure is if there are already Canadians doing the same thing for free.

OK thanks, I will try to find that out.

So you have read the official definition of work where short term unpaid volunteering does not count although always advisable to not imply to CBSA this is the primary entry reason which as you say it is to attend an event.

In fact although always be honest with CBSA avoid stating upfront unless asked that volunteer work is in any plan given the fluid nature of volunteering which may or may not happen. Mentioning the fact if not asked by CBSA can just lead to more unnecessary scruitiny.
