I have a question, a friend of mine has applied through a country where he was on a student visa, as he had visa for a year. But now since the visa has expired does he need to inform the immigration people? What would they do to his case? Will it be affected? Or can he go back to his country without informing immigration and come back on visiting visa when they require him for interview or let's say the interview is waived, then can he just send in his passport from his country? Would the expired visa affect his case?

yes he needs to inform immigration. any communication regarding his visa will be sent to the address CIC has on file in the country he was studying. They will NOT send it anywhere else unless he specifically changes his address. What happens with his file is up to cic. no one on here can tell you what that decision will be. also, if he doesn't inform CIC and moves to another country, CIC could think he is misrepresenting himself and deny his visa. That is trouble your friend doesn't want to get involved with.
