Hello. I hope you guys can help me with my predicament. My fathers visa is expiring Feb 2020.

So my father arrive in Canada May 28, 2019 and now I am planning to extend his stay until his visa expires in Feb 2020. But the thing is, I have his PR application on process as well. I would like to know if you guys had any experience of trying to apply for another visa for him to stay in Canada until his PR comes out. Is it possible? And how do I do it?

if you’re extending his status as visitor while his PR is in process, that’s all you need to do.

He does not need a valid TRV to be able to stay in Canada, as a TRV is a document for *entering* Canada. Since he is already in Canada, he does not need one until he leaves and tries to re-enter Canada after February 2020 and before he becomes a PR.

Thank you. Yes i only need to extend for now. But after that when his visa expires in 2020 do i need to apply for a new visa while waiting for his pr? Can he stay in implied status? And is it still going to be a visitor visa while waiting for pr?

He needs to apply for an extension. No - does not have implied status while waiting for PR. You have to keep extending his status to keep him in Canada legally.

“extend stay” and “apply visa” are different processes for different purposes. A visa is only useful for entering Canada from a foreign country, not staying inside Canada for a prolonged time. He does not need to apply for a new visa if he is not exiting Canada while waiting for PR. As scylla said, you just have to apply to extend his visitor status until he gets to activate his PR.

besides, visitors aren’t allowed to apply for visas from inside Canada, only those with work or study permits.
