I am from the UK and planning on applying for the Working Holiday Visa, I am unsure what the best option is for health insurance so wondered what other people had got - I don't go to the doctor very often but want something that isnt too expensive that will cover me to go to the doctor if I need to and hospital should something bad happen.

Get travel insurance (somewhere like InsureandGo.com or Essentialtravel.co.uk but Google backpacker insurance to get different quotes). That way you'll be covered for medical and your personal belongings.

If you get it from the UK then if something really bad happens (fingers crossed it won't obviously) you should be covered for repatriation back to the UK, otherwise you could get stuck in Canada paying long term medical bills until you are well enough for an airline to agree to fly you home.
(I used to work in travel insurance so have dealt with the most hideous situations!!)

Canooknic, Canadian Insurance companies can cover repatriation back to the home country too.
If you were unhappy with your case it does not mean that the insurance industry is completely gilty.
I am not sure that you have a clue how Visitors to Canada Insurance works despite you statement.

If you read what I said I was talking about insurance from the UK, I made no reference to knowing about Canadian cover.
I never said anything about being unhappy with any cover either, I said I worked for a travel insurance company and dealt with some terrible situations where people ended up with £1000s of debt because they didn't have adequate insurance.

Don't attack people for trying to help.

I would wholeheartedly recommend that you purchase insurance from a Canadian Insurance Company. They definitely WILL cover repatriation as an insurance policy from your home country also likely would, but the biggest difference would be if you have a claim. Most CANADIAN healthcare providers will direct bill a CANADIAN Insurer, but NOT a foreign one! Even if you eventually get reimbursed when you get back home, you may find it a stretch to cover several thousands of dollars of expenses upfront if you need treatment. Additionally, I think you will find our rates very competitive Internationally. Please check us out -you can purchase your coverage from our website, prior to your visit.

How does this work if a person has to come back to home country for a while, like Christmas. Does it mean the coverage is cancelled or just temporarily suspended?

Dear Vancouverite89, that would really depend on the company you have the policy from. A few companies allow travel back to the home country without cancelling the policy, while others do not and the policy would be null as soon as you go back. If you let me know which company, I can definitely tell you what their policy is regarding home travel.
