I am a Canadian citizen living in Alberta.

My future wife will be moving here from the U.S.A.

Do we need to but a medical insurance plan while we wait for the application to be approved? Or can she be a dependent under me in the Alberta Health Services medical system?

If I need to buy her insurance, what are some good companies? And insurance that also covers us in the event she gets pregnant?

I just looked this up (for Alberta) yesterday. According to Service Alberta's website, as your dependent she is eligible for health coverage.

See: http://www.health.alberta.ca/AHCIP/registration-requirements.html

I have read others with pending applications in Alberta have successfully obtained health coverage. Note that because health insurance varies by province you really must research this for your specific province (I just happen to know about BC and AB provincial health because they are also the only provinces I've found that allow one to opt-out of health coverage. That's not an option for BC.)

The key form appears to be this one: http://www.health.alberta.ca/documents/AHCIP-form-AHC0107.pdf

So I would suggest contacting Service Alberta to confirm their policy with respect to this (I don't see anything explicit here that says a spouse awaiting PR is covered or not covered.)

Hopefully this helps.

Good luck!
