Hello. My wife is coming from India as she just received PR. Is it true that to enter she needs to purchase health insurance? I read somewhere that it is a requirement to even enter the country?

I don't know if it is a requirement but it would be a good idea for the first 3 month before being eligible for public health system. It will cost you around 300$.

dont really wanna spend 300 on something that most likely wont even be needed. Does anyone else know for sure if it is mandatory or not?

I did some research on google and I don't find anything that say that it's mandatory to have health insurance. What I know it's that they never ask my wife if she had private health insurance when she visited me and when she landed. So it's probably up to you to get private health insurance or not.

No mandatory
In toronto OHIP starts after 03 months of arrival. So if she needs any health related coverage she needs for first 03 months of arrival. after that she will be covered by Government.

Health insurance is not mentioned in the requirements to secure an immigrant visa in Canada.

She might not be covered by healthcare for 3-4 months so you're gambling. Any accident or health scare will come out of pocket.

Yes I think either you take health insurance coverage for the first three months or pay any unforeseen health related costs from your pocket!

Yeah it's a big gambling, you save about 300$ if nothing happens it's ok but if you get sick it will cost way more than 300$

Not mandatory.

Depends how much risk you're willing to undertake. An unplanned stay in a hospital can easily cost $10K or more (a lot more, depending on the circumstances). If you're OK with that, go without insurance.

You are not spending money on something, you spend it on your wife! Good man..
